Sesame Rice | How to make Ellu Sadam

Ellu Sadam is a mixed rice variety from Tamil Nadu made with Sesame Seeds and spices. This makes a quick meal by itself.

  • 1/2 cup Rice
  • 1 cup Water

For the Powder

  • 2 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 4 nos Dry Red Chilies

For Tempering

  • 2 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Chana Dal
  • Handful Cashew Nuts
  • Handful Curry Leaves
  • A Pinch Asafoedita / Hing
  • 2 Dry Red Challis
  • Salt to taste


  • Wash and soak the rice for 10 mins.
  • Take rice and water in a pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles.
  • Meanwhile, dry roast the sesame seeds and dry red chilies for 5 mins, allow to cool.
  • Grind to a smooth powder and keep it aside.
  • In a nonstick pan, heat oil, temper with all the ingredients and saute for few mins.
  • Now add the sesame powder and saute for a minute.
  • Add the cooked rice and mix well.
  • Offer as Neivedyam and partake.
