Khobz al Tawa ~ Yemeni Bread

Khobz al tawa is a delicious bread from Yemen, it is especially popular in Aden and the southern areas. It gets the name tawa since it is cooked on a griddle or tawa. This is a layered flatbread with each layer greased with butter. Makes a wonderful bread to enjoy a creamy gravy.

  • 4 cup All purpose flour / Bread flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Water
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Butter melted


  • Take the flour in a wide bowl along with salt, and water. Knead a smooth dough, let it rest for 20 minutes.Make 4 balls from the dough .
  • Take on ball on the rolling board and roll it as thin as you can. You can also stretch it thin by tossing over the board.
  • Apply melted butter all over the thin rolled sheet. Fold it side by side applying butter on each side.
  • Once you made the square , let it rest for 5 minutes more and then roll it a little bit more.
  • Heat a Tawa and apply some butter over it. Transfer the rolled square over it and let it cook for 5 minutes. Flip the side and cook again.
  • Serve hot with any side dish or tea.
