Aval Murukku | How to make Poha Chakli

Aval Murukku or Poha Chakli is savory rice based snack made with rice flour and beaten rice or the thick poha. These are Jar snacks that you can make ahead for kids and stock.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice Flour
  • 1/2 cup Beaten Rice / Thick Poha / Aval, heaped
  • 1/4 cup Fried Gram
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp Butter soft at room temp.
  • Salt to taste
  • Cooking Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  • Take the poha in a mixer jar and powder it and set aside. Sieve and remove coarse pieces.
  • Take the fried gram in the mixer and powder it well.
  • Use homemade rice flour and sieve all the flours to remove coarse pieces.
  • Take the flours in a wide bowl, add cumin seeds, red chili powder, butter, and salt.
  • Mix everything to a soft and smooth dough. You can use any murukku acchu you want.
  • I like the star one and used it for these as it gives a nice crispy effect.
  • Heat a kadai with oil and when hot, fill the mold and press it either directly or make small murukkus in a plate and gently slide into hot oil.
  • Lower the flame and cook the murukkus on both sides
  • Drain on to a kitchen towel.
