Sunday was one hectic day. It was Konda's birthday and you can imagine what ruckus it would've caused. She has been always interested in her birthdays and would always keep saying it's her birthday every other month! The first time she understood this concept of celebrating her birthdays, was when she started going to school and seen others getting toffees and gifts.

When she was a toddler, one day she came all excited and told me that it was her best friend's birthday and she was given two toffees. In the same breath, she asked when her birthday was. Since it falls during summer vacation, we felt bad that she can never enjoy her birthday with her school friends. So she takes toffees to her friends before her school closes for summer.

This year too, it was no different. And once the school closes, she is forever declaring what she is going to do on her birthday. This time around too, she went about inviting everybody to the party. Since I didn't know how many she invited, I was really apprehensive. I had a hectic dinner menu in mind. So we planned for a simpler lunch. The scorching heat is not being good for the little ones and them kind of had their turns of temperature.

So Chinnu was not very involved in the dizzy happenings. Whereas Konda had planned on a dance performance with her friend. We were really surprised at the performance and it was the highlight, to say the least. To think that she has choreographed and taught her friends the steps, we were impressed. She loves this Chak De movie title song, and every time I am on the system, it has to run for her. I never knew she practiced steps for that song.

The waiting and the cooking were happening and all of a sudden everybody arrived. The moment cake cutting was done, Konda was pestering us to put that song on. No sooner I did, both of them started dancing to the tune and we saw Peddu running around trying to follow the steps, after a while, he got bored and went around his tricycle. It was really hilarious to boot!

This is what I prepared for the dinner, Tamil Nadu Style Layered Parotta, Nellore Chicken, X-chicken, and Konda's favorite Paneer Butter Masala

Coming to the simple lunch we prepare, since the mango season is upon us, I think we will see a lot of mango dishes being made. Though I must say we prefer it as such! This is a simple chutney that goes as an accompaniment for Dal or Sambar along with Plain Rice or Ragi Sangati. So we made Endimirapakaya Pappu and Ragi Sangati.

    Mango Chutney

    Ingredients Needed

    Roasted in Oil
    Red chilies - 6
Roasted Ground Nuts - 2 tbsp
    Raw items
    Raw Mango - 1/2
    Garlic - 5 medium pods
    Onion - 1 medium

    Seasonings

Mustard Seeds + Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
    Bengal Gram - 1/2 tsp
    Curry Leaves - few
    Red chilies - 3 whole.

    Method to prepare:
Roast the Red chilies and Groundnuts together in oil. You can use raw groundnuts too.
Once cool, grind the roasted items along with the raw mango, chopped onions, garlic. The onions should not be ground fully. It should have small chunks remaining.
Then heat a pan with 1 tsp oil and add the seasoning items. Once done, add this to the raw ground chutney.
This is a kind of tangy and pungent because of the raw ingredients. As I said, this is best to go with dal, and may not be good on its own for nonandhra eaters. This is an authentic Andhra dish, so you got to get used to the taste of the raw stuff. Stays good for a day as onions are raw.

Belated birthday wishes to Konda. What a lovely party - simple, and filled with joy and laughter, as a child's birthday party should be. Not the extravagant, show-offy affairs that so many parents spoil their kids with these days!
