For the fourth of Navaratri, I made Thakkali Sadam and Pattani Sundal.
I have a couple of other Thakkali Sadam posted already. This is yet another simpler way of cooking with tomatoes. Both the other Thakkali Sadam uses roasted masalas.
And the Pattani Sundal is the same, except I used roasted coriander powder in it. That gave a different taste to the final dish.
Thakkali Sadam Recipe 3
Ingredients Needed:
Rice -1 & 1/2 cup
Tomatoes - 5 medium / 250 gms (coarsely pureed)
Dry Red Chilies - 3 -4
Red Chili powder 1 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Mustard seeds, Urad dal - 1 tsp
Chana dal - 1tsp
Roasted/ Raw peanuts -1 tbsp
Cashew nuts - handful
Curry leaves handful
Salt to taste
Ghee - 1 tsp (opt)
How to make the Thakkali Sadam
Wash and soak the rice for 15 - 20 mins.
Pressure Cook for 3 whistles. Once the pressure falls, remove and spread in a bowl.
For the Rice:
Heat a nonstick pan with oil. Temper with mustard seeds, Urad dal, channa dal, peanuts, cashew nuts, red chilies, curry leaves. Saute for a couple of minutes, then add the tomato puree.
Add salt, turmeric powder, cover with a lid and cook till the tomato is cooked well. Add the chili powder. Cook for a couple of more mins. Add rice and combine everything.
Simmer for 5 mins, finally, add the ghee.
Serve as neivedyam and partake in the prasadam.

here in malaysia, tomato rice is prepared more like ghee rice this is something that i should try....tq
