Cabbage Patoli or Andhra Style Patoli Recipe, a healthy protein-packed vegetable side dish popular in Andhra. This tastes excellent as a side dish for Rice.

Patoli, a traditional Andhra Dish is a vegan, protein-rich dish made with Chana Dal and spices. You can serve this as a side dish along with Rice or even for Rotis. This dish is very much similar to the Paruppu Usli, popular in Tamil Cuisine.

Traditional Andhra Style Patoli Recipe uses chana dal. We grind the soaked chana dal with green chilies, red chilies, steamed, crumbled. We temper the ground dal and mix it with boiled vegetables to cook into a dry dish.

Patoli is same as Paruppu Usli:

First of all, Paruppu Usli is an excellent way to sneak in vegetables and protein to your family. Traditional vegetables we can use will be french beans, cluster beans, methi leaves, and carrot as well. We can use plantain, capsicum as well.

First of all, this savory patoli is different from the sweet dish. Another difference is, Patholi is a steamed rice roll, we stuff it with fresh coconut and jaggery mix. Probably these two dishes have the same name. While today's recipe is a savory side dish, the other dish is sweet.

Steamed Patholi is a popular sweet made for Ganesh Chaturthi. They steam the sweet in fresh Turmeric leaves. Patoleo (singular: Patoli) are a turmeric leaf stuffed leaf wrap, popular in Maharashtra and Goa.

I am very fond of Paruppu Usli and make it with different vegetables like carrots, french beans, plantain, etc. Beans Paruppu Usli is my most favorite of all. Athaamma makes it Cluster Beans or Mottikaya and serves it with Jonna Roti.

We mostly make it along with Sambar for lunch. You can always serve this with rice or roti as a side dish as well. My colleague used to get this with just rice, and it tastes simply great.

Cabbage Patoli is my choice for C in my attempt to make A to Z Easy Family Dinner Ideas.

Ingredients Used in making Cabbage Patoli

Cabbage: Cabbage is the star ingredient in this dry saute. Cabbage is a healthy vegetable to include in your regular meals.

Chana Dal: The ground lentil paste is made with chana dal. There are versions that use moong dal as well.

Other ingredients: The regular tempering ingredients along with chilies are used in this dry curry

Fried or Steamed: Traditional recipe uses the ground, steamed, and crumbled chana dal to make this patoli. Above all, as a result of sauteeing in Kadai, this gets done quickly. You may end up using a teaspoon of oil extra. However, it tastes great.
